WE ARE OFTEN ASKED ABOUT VOLUMES OF PRODUCTION, SERIAL NUMBERS RANGES, AND OTHER DETAILS REGARDING SPEEDMASTERS, ESPECIALLY ABOUT VINTAGE MODELS. AND THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION COULD BE: WHICH REFERENCES ARE RARER THAN OTHERS (AS THIS SHOULD LOGICALLY IMPACT ON PRICES)?

Collectors will find many information in the MOONWATCH ONLY book, which contains and presents all the data that we have observed, analysed, and verified with the collaboration of the OMEGA Museum and their archives.

We will not present all this information on our website. The purpose of this short review is to summarize the main features of the production starting with the very first reference in 1957.

This will help readers and Speedmasters fans to understand better the key numbers related to the Moonwatch story, and to focus on the models they will choose for their own collection.

1. VOLUMES OF PRODUCTION

ACTUALLY, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE TOTAL VOLUME OF SPEEDMASTERS PRODUCED SINCE 1957.

NEVERTHELESS WE ARE ABLE TO ESTIMATE THE VOLUME OF THOSE FITTED WITH THE CALIBER 321 AT APPROXIMATELY 80’000 TO 83’000 WATCHES.

During our research, we have found data that allowed us to approximate fairly accurately the volume of calibers 321 produced at 127’500 (probably more if we take into account spare movements). About 114’600 of them match the Speedmaster era (starting from 1957).

It is far more difficult to estimate the number of Speedmasters fitted with the caliber 321 because some data are lacking. Nevertheless we have been able to estimate those volumes for each reference thanks to our research at the OMEGA archives.

The information presented hereafter do not represent definitive or official numbers, but probably corresponds to the most advanced and reliable information so far.

2. SERIAL NUMBERS TABLES

THIS IS A SERIOUS CHALLENGE.

All of us know the numerous tables that have been published online during the last years… Some being serious but not updated, others being the superficial result of a copy & paste from unverified information. In some cases, tables refer to the movements production, and not to watches… That is why readers have to be extremely cautious with such information.

The tables presented here – for the very first time – are based exclusively on the research that we have achieved for the MOONWATCH ONLY book. As stated in the book, we cannot claim that our results are all inclusive. However, they represent the only verified source of information ever published, thanks to the analysis and controls that we have been able to conduct with the collaboration of the OMEGA archives.

The year of production stated in the tables is the date of the assembly or the dispatch of the watch, and not the introduction date of the model or that given in the case reference inside the caseback.

TABLE A.

CALIBER 321 – S/N BLOCKS CORRESPONDING TO THE SPEEDMASTER ERA

The following table shows – for the very first time – verified s/n blocks of OMEGA watches fitted with a 321 (not only Speedmasters). The red column on the right lists the Speedmasters references found in each block.

TABLE B.

SPEEDMASTERS FITTED WITH CALIBER 321

The following table shows the serial numbers ranges for the Speedmasters references fitted with the caliber 321.

TABLE C.

SPEEDMASTERS FITTED WITH CALIBER 861 OR 1861

The following table shows the serial numbers ranges for the Speedmasters references fitted with the caliber 861 or 1861.
